When the cold air lingers on with heavy clouds gathering on the skylines on the Tomb-Sweeping Day of April 4, Ambassador Shen Minjuan and diplomats of the Embassy, together with representatives of Chinese enterprises and the Association of Chinese Nationals in Mongolia traveled to the suburbs of Ulaanbaatar to pay tribute to Counselor Mao Jiayi and Chinese workers sent to build the country in the 1950s and 1960s, who passed away on duty in Mongolia.

Ambassador Shen and the group cleaned up the grass around the tomb carefully, wiped off the dust on the gravestones, presented flowers, and bowed in silent tribute to extend the deepest condolences and highest respect.

Ambassador Shen stepped to smooth the elegiac couplets and delivered the eulogy. In 1993, Counselor Mao Jiayi worked around the clock for an important diplomatic mission and was found unconscious because of overwork, sacrificing his life for the China-Mongolia friendship and the diplomatic cause of China. In the 1950s and 1960s, nearly 30,000 Chinese workers came to Mongolia and constructed many important projects and buildings in Mongolia, especially Ulaanbaatar, all with their blood, sweat, and tears. Over 120 people gave their lives for the development of Mongolia. Their unforgettable contributions to the national development of Mongolia mark a vital chapter in the history of China-Mongolia relations.

Ambassador Shen said that the dedication, resilience, hard work, and perseverance of the diplomatic predecessors and Chinese workers are characters that transcend history to inspire generations to come. On the day when countless Chinese honor those who sacrificed their lives for our life today, we are here to recall their stories and express the highest respect and deepest condolences. Their spirit, our original aspiration, and due responsibilities will be the guide to carry forward the baton of the China-Mongolia friendship for a brighter future of the two countries and the bilateral relations and for the major-country diplomacy in the new era.

Encouraged by the speech, those present at the event said that as the traditional friendship between China and Mongolia continues to go deeper and the comprehensive strategic partnership has been booming, we will give a satisfactory answer to the China-Mongolia relations with actions in honor of those before us.
