Two major summit meetings draw global attention to Beijing

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Mongolia

Within a single week in mid-May, President Xi Jinping hosted state visits to China by U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, drawing worldwide attention to China.

The two major visits happened at a special moment in history. As the international landscape becomes increasingly turbulent, geopolitical conflicts keep flaring up, and the global economic recovery remains sluggish, stability is becoming an ever scarcer resource. For China and the U.S., this year marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence when both countries enter critical stages of development. For China and Russia, this year marks the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, bringing bilateral ties to a new starting point.

The meeting between the Chinese and U.S. presidents agreed on a new vision of building a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, setting the course for the world’s most important bilateral relationship. The Chinese and Russian presidents signed the Joint Statement on Further Strengthening Comprehensive Partnership and Strategic Interaction and Deepening Relations of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation. The two sides also issued the Joint Statement on Advocating a Multipolar World and a New Type of International Relations. Together, these represent the answer of our times jointly written by leaders of major countries. They meet the common expectations of the international community and bring significant benefits to the world.

First, the summits help stabilize the international system and order. As the world’s largest developing country and largest developed country, China and the U.S. seek to avoid the Thucydides Trap and transcend the narrow zero-sum mentality. This will help the two countries engage in positive interaction, shoulder the responsibilities of major countries, and jointly respond to global challenges. China and Russia remain firmly committed to safeguarding the post-war international order and the authority of international law, opposing all forms of unilateral bullying and attempts to reverse the course of history, and jointly countering the threat of Japan’s “remilitarization”. The two countries are also committed to strengthening the role and influence of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and enhancing solidarity and coordination within the BRICS mechanism to promote a more just and fairer international order.

The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. Safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the biggest common denominator between China and the U.S., and the prerequisite is that “Taiwan independence” must never be supported or indulged. The impression coming out of the summit is that the U.S. side understands China’s position, takes China’s concerns seriously, and, like the rest of the international community, does not agree with or accept Taiwan’s moving toward independence.

Second, the summits help promote global economic growth. China and the U.S. are the world’s two largest economies, and economic and trade cooperation has always served as the ballast and propeller of the bilateral relations. The fact that executives from more than 10 renowned American companies accompanied the delegation on this visit fully demonstrates that China remains a prime destination for investment among the U.S. business community. The two sides agreed to establish trade and investment councils and to expand two-way trade within the framework of reciprocal tariff reduction. This will contribute not only to win-win outcomes for China and the U.S., but also to shared gains for the world.

China-Russia trade has exceeded USD 200 billion for three consecutive years and grew by nearly 20% in the first four months of this year. From energy connectivity and scientific and technological innovation, to the digital economy and green and low-carbon transformation, practical cooperation between China and Russia continues to improve in quality and scale, serving the development and revitalization of both countries and the wider region.

Third, the summits help consolidate friendship between the peoples. Deep friendship between peoples is the source of strength driving state-to-state relations. This year marks the 55th anniversary of China-U.S. “Ping-Pong Diplomacy”. The two countries are continuing to write new chapters of people-to-people exchanges in which “the small ball moves the big globe”. “Becoming Chinese” and “Chinamaxxing” have gone viral across American social media platforms. The growing two-way youth exchanges will shape the future of China-U.S. relations. The Chinese and Russian presidents also launched the Year of Education. The two sides will deepen cooperation in talent cultivation, carry forward traditional friendship, promote mutual understanding between the two peoples, and ensure that China-Russia friendship will be passed on from generation to generation.

Head-of-state diplomacy serves as the compass and anchor of relations among major countries. This year, China and the U.S. will respectively host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Leaders’ Summit. At the invitation of President Trump, President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the U.S. this autumn. The Chinese and Russian presidents will also meet again on occasions such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit. China stands ready to work with the U.S. and Russia to implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state, make 2026 a historic and landmark year that carries forward and opens up China-U.S. relations, and enable China-Russia relations to achieve even greater progress and faster growth from a new starting point, thereby injecting greater stability and positive energy into the world.

Global governance requires the responsibility and leadership of major countries, but it also depends on the joint efforts of all nations. The Four Global Initiatives provide an important platform for building international consensus. On May 28, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will chair the meeting of the Group of Friends for Global Governance in New York. China looks forward to working with like-minded countries, including Mongolia, to pool greater strength and promote world peace and development.
